  • Zoned Out

John was zoned out. He stared off into the distance.

“John, John.” Lucy called out. “Are you okay?” And then she gave him a small nudge in the arm.

John nodded his head and turned in her direction.

“Can you fill my cup for me?” She said as she held it up him.

“Yeah. Sure, no problem. I’ll be right back.”

When John came back with her drink she gave him her answer. The answer was, yes. They were both excited. Then they made plans for her to come back later that night around five when he gets off from work.

    5:02 PM

Lucy waited in the lobby for John. He was a few minutes behind schedule, but she was okay with it.

    5:22 PM

John walked out from the back. “Are you ready?” He asked.

    “Yep. Let’s go.” She replied.

“You don’t mind if I drive by the house first, so I can change clothes do you?” He asked as they walked out of the door.

    “Sure. No problem.”

John headed down the road in the direction of his house. Once there, he told Lucy he would only be a minute. But a few minutes later, he came back outside and asked Lucy if she would like to wait inside where it was warmer.

“Okay. Lead the way.” She said.

Once inside, John grabbed a couple glasses from the kitchen and poured them both a drink. As he poured, Lucy walked over towards the wall where several pictures sat on a couple shelves that looked like they were home made. While her back was turned away from him, he slipped something into her drink.

He carried both glasses over to the pictures where Lucy stood. He handed her drink to her and then started to tell her who the different people were. A few minutes later she started to feel a little sleepy and asked to sit down on the couch.

  • Flashback

As he started to walk in her direction, he had a flashback of his childhood.

John heard his mom calling from the kitchen. He hated when she called him. Usually it was for the dishes or maybe to take out the trash. For a family of three, there sure was a lot of trash every week.

“John come here right this minute.” She called again.

All John wanted to do was play with his toys and watch TV or play video games. He hated to do the chores.

This is so annoying. I just want to be left alone. He thought to himself.

“Okay, since you won’t come to me, I’ll go to you. You piece shit brat kid.”

The front door opened. It was dad. He had been working late all week. But today he got home earlier than the other days.

“Where’s that no good son of mine at?” He shouted as loud as he could.

“He’s in his bedroom all taped up. He wouldn’t come when I called him for the trash.” The mother replied.

Then she continued, “Of course I had to tie his hands first. He won’t lay still for me like he does for you when you do it to him. But he’s all good and taped up now. I even taped over the rope on his hands.”

The dad walked to John’s bedroom and opened the door. There on the bed was John squirming to get free from the tape.

“Let me just tape you up some more. Just to be sure you stay that way. At least until morning when it’s time for school.”

The mother was in the hallway. She heard sounds of duct tape being wrapped around her sons body from the feet all the way to the elbows.

“There you go. My no good son of mine. Squirm out that.” The dad said as he turned off the light and closed the door.

  • Seven Hours Earlier

Seven hours earlier Lucy stopped by Drexel’s Coffee Shop on Hopewell Street in Wood Valley. A small town of around 20,000 people. This was a regular stop for her everyday around 1:30 p.m. But this time was different.

The day before, she had been asked to go out on a date by John the clerk who worked behind the counter. And was always there every day when Lucy stopped in for coffee. Instead of jumping the gun and saying no, she told him that she would think about it and get back to him.

As Lucy walked in she noticed there was line at the counter. So she took a seat at a nearby table and waited for John to assist the customers. After all, there was really no reason for her to wait in line. They had been talking everyday during his breaks for the last couple of weeks. So, he already knew what her order was.

Lucy sat there waiting. She daydreamed about her past dates. How they didn’t work out? How she was to blame? How it was her childhood that was the problem? She was nervous about the next few minutes. What answer would she decide to tell him? Would he be upset with her answer?

John finished with the last person in line. He turned her direction and smiled. Then he proceeded to get her coffee order and also himself a drink and walked to her table.
